Executive presence is perceived in the first few seconds, before you say a single word.
Most people have been preparing for the wrong moment. They rehearse what they’ll say, practice their slides, run through their talking points one last time on their way to the boardroom, walk into the room, and lose the room before they open their mouth.
Here’s what I hope more professionals will get to understand about presence.
Before a word leaves your mouth, the room has already started forming a judgment — from how you walk in, where you sit, or even what you do with your hands while others are speaking. Content matters enormously, but it arrives second.
You can be exceptional at your job and still be read as uncertain in the room. I’ve watched it happen to brilliant people more times than I can count. Presence is a separate skill, and it can be built independently of expertise.
Silence is oftentimes the clearest expression of presence. The person who pauses before answering a hard question usually reads as more credible than the one who rushes to fill the silence.
The goal isn’t to be identical everywhere. It’s to be intentional everywhere.
A nervous tone can undercut a brilliant point, meanwhile a grounded tone can carry an average point further than it deserves to go.
I have seen quiet, measured leaders command rooms that louder colleagues couldn’t hold. Volume was never the variable.
The professionals who struggle most with presence are usually the ones trying to perform a version of leadership that isn’t theirs. The ones who succeed are the ones who get specific about who they actually are, and lead from there.
Presence isn’t a personality trait some people are born with and others aren’t. It’s a skill. It can be diagnosed, it can be built, and it compounds over time. That’s why Face Power is here. Save this as a reference for every time you have a meeting or presentation.
