Many executives and professionals don’t lose opportunities because they lack expertise. They lose them because of how they communicate that expertise.
I’ve worked with professionals who are exceptionally skilled, yet struggle to attract clients, gain visibility, or position themselves as the obvious choice in their industry.
In most cases, the issue isn’t competence but communication and presence.
In this article, I highlight 3 common communication mistakes that could be costing executives the clients, opportunities, credibility, and influence they crave.
Most executives default to describing what they do. The problem is that clients aren’t buying your processes and methodologies, they’re buying relief from a problem they’re facing, or a better version of their future.
The shift is from “We provide service XYZ” to “Our clients go from pain A to outcome C.” When you anchor your communication in transformation, you speak directly to what the client actually cares about — their results, their reputation, their growth.
This is the most common and least recognized mistake. In high-stakes conversations, executives are often mentally composing their response while the other party is still speaking. The result is they catch the surface of what’s said but miss the subtext — the real hesitation, the unstated priority, the emotional driver behind the ask.
True listening means staying fully present, asking follow-up questions that show you absorbed what was said, and tolerating silence before you respond. When a client feels genuinely heard, trust accelerates dramatically.
“I’ll send something over” and “Let’s stay in touch” are relationship killers dressed up as pleasantries. They create ambiguity, leaving the client in a state of not knowing what to expect, when to expect it, or whether to act.
A strong follow-through looks like this: “I’ll send you a one-pager by Thursday — does that work?” or “Can we schedule 30 minutes next week to go deeper on this?” It signals that you’re organized, reliable, and serious about their time. More importantly, it keeps momentum alive. Most deals don’t die from rejection, they die from drift.
The good news is every one of these mistakes can be fixed.
